Criteria

In order to acquire the White Flag, each institution must sign a contract agreeing to the following:

  • Initial inspection of the seabed by approved divers who will GPS mark the critical areas and photo document the debris
  • Whiteflag International establishes the most ecologically sound method for cleaning and, in conjunction with the establishment, arrange for local resources to recycle and properly dispose of the removed items
  • Debris is sorted and recorded for a long term documentation, to be shared with other environmental organizations working on marine litter and water conservation
  • Public Relations materials are to be posted (signs, maps, eco-education info) to ensure that patrons understand the importance of marine pollution and that the establishment prioritizes clean water
  • The contract is of a duration of 5 years consisting of one time-fee for the initial inspection, clean up, eco-education material, a White Flag ceremony and an annual maintenance fee including inspection

The holders of the White Flag directly support the protection of the world's seas, lakes, and rivers by performing local cleanups. A percentage of the profit from each White Flag goes directly to GUWAA, an association that works to clean the waterways globally, via divers hands, on practical cleanups worldwide. GUWAA has acquired world-wide credibility through showing visual results by salvaging enormous amounts of garbage from the bottoms of the world's seas, lakes, and rivers.
