Malta as the first plastic-free ocean country
Malta will become the world's leading top environmental ocean tourism destination that provides plastic-free beaches along its whole coastline (White Flag Macro CSMA).
Country of Malta is the first country in the world to expand its White Flag program from micro to macro CSMA certification which implies the cleaning of the entire coastline of Malta. This historic decision was initiated by Joseph Muscat, Prime Minister of Malta, Jose Herrera, Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development, and Climate Change, and Konrad Mizzi, Minister for Tourism in Malta. The initiative is supported by H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta.
The certification is already in the process and so far more than 5 beaches have been cleaned by high-professional Whiteflag International divers and inspectors. The entire project will require more than 12 months of operations along the coastline, but - already at the Our Ocean Conference 2018 in Bali, Indonesia, Malta will present itself as plastic-free ocean area and tourism country that offers more for tourists that are environmentally friendly and love the ocean. This initiative will save thousands of animal lives in the oceans - birds, turtles, fish, and other aquatic life.
On the occasion of March 12th, 2019, the Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat will be officially signing the OACM membership together with OACM President, Kristijan Curavic.
