Mankind is treating the oceans as a waste disposal pit. Around 80 percent of waste found in the sea originates from land, most of it being the plastic. Plastic that pollutes our aquatic ecosystems has severe impact on the environment, economy and on our society itself. Seabirds, whales, sea turtles and other marine organisms ingest marine plastic which causes digestive and respiratory side effects, intoxication, intestinal blockage, starvation and death. Scientists are investigating the long-term impact from toxic pollutants absorbed, transported and consumed by fish and other marine organisms, including the potential effects on human health through the food which originates from aquatic ecosystems.

Majority of the plastic found in aquatic ecosystems are settles on top of the sediment and sea beds. White Flag International specializes in cleaning sediments, ocean beds and water beds from crude manmade waste. Since sea beds are often too fragile for machines or industrial hardware to perform this kind of cleanup, our association only uses divers to hand pick all of the waste.

White Flag International has a mission to engage as many divers world wide as possible, to work together and deal with this global problem. A lot of effort is invested in research in order to find new and more effective ways of dealing with this problem.
